Best Free Resume Builders in India 2026

We tested 10 free resume builders against the same job description from Infosys, the same Naukri auto-screen, and the same LinkedIn Easy Apply flow. Here's what actually works for Indian job seekers — and what's a waste of time. Honest comparison, no affiliate fluff.

How we tested

Every builder below was tested on three things real Indian job seekers care about:

  1. Free tier reality. Can you actually download a CV without paying? Most "free" builders are paywalled at PDF download.
  2. ATS pass rate. We uploaded each CV to Resumeworded, Jobscan, and the actual Naukri parser. Pass = 80%+ keyword extraction.
  3. Indian context. Does it handle ₹ symbols correctly? Indian phone numbers (+91)? Date formats (DD/MM/YYYY)? B.Tech / B.E. / M.Tech / MBA section labels?

The test CV was the same throughout: a B.Tech (Computer Science) fresher from a tier-2 college targeting placement at Infosys, TCS, and Wipro. Two internships, no full-time experience.

1. MakeMyCVNow

Full disclosure: this is our product. We've tried to keep this entry as honest as possible — we list real weaknesses below.

What it does well

  • Built specifically for India and Norway. Pricing in ₹ via Razorpay. Handles GST exemption under ₹20 lakh threshold. Norwegian Bokmål support if you ever look at Norwegian roles.
  • Free tier actually downloads. You get one AI-generated CV, one cover letter, one PDF download — no credit card. The Modern template is included.
  • AI rewrites with measurable claims. Bullets get quantified ("Improved onboarding activation by 28%" instead of "Improved onboarding").
  • CV Gap Analyser. Paste any Naukri, LinkedIn, or company URL — get a match score 0–100, list of missing keywords, and a one-click tailored rewrite.
  • 11 ATS-friendly templates. Modern, Executive, Corporate, Minimal, Classic, Timeline (standard) plus premium designs (Prestige, Atlas, Sovereign, Slate, Arc, Aurora, Bloom, Meridian).

Where it could be better

  • Free tier is one-shot. You get one AI generation, then it's ₹99 for a 7-day pass. Most freshers find this fine for placement season but not for long job searches.
  • No mobile app. The PWA is solid on phones but there's no native app yet.
  • Newer brand. Launched late 2025 — fewer reviews than Zety or Resume.com.

Pricing

  • Free: 1 CV, 1 cover letter, 1 PDF, Modern template only
  • 7-Day Pass: ₹99 (all templates, unlimited AI, gap analyser)
  • Monthly: ₹299

Best for: Freshers preparing for placements, B.Tech / MBA / M.Tech students, anyone applying via Naukri or LinkedIn, and Norwegian job seekers using Finn.no.

2. Naukri Resume Builder

Naukri's built-in resume builder is genuinely free and the obvious choice if you're already applying through Naukri.com. It's the only builder on this list that's officially integrated with India's largest job platform.

Strengths

  • Completely free, no paywall
  • Auto-syncs with your Naukri profile
  • Passes Naukri's own ATS perfectly (obviously)
  • Handles Indian job context natively

Weaknesses

  • Limited templates — 5 designs, mostly dated
  • No AI writing assistance
  • The PDF watermark on the free version is small but visible
  • Not great if you're applying outside Naukri

Best for: Job seekers whose primary channel is Naukri. If you're applying mostly through Naukri's app, just use this — no need to overthink it.

3. LinkedIn Resume Builder

LinkedIn's built-in resume generator pulls from your profile and converts it to a one-page CV. Free for all LinkedIn users.

Strengths

  • Zero data entry — uses your existing LinkedIn profile
  • Free
  • Clean output, ATS-friendly by default
  • Available in the LinkedIn mobile app

Weaknesses

  • Only 3 templates, no customisation
  • No AI rewriting — exports what's already on LinkedIn
  • If your LinkedIn profile is weak, the CV will be too
  • No India-specific features

Best for: If your LinkedIn profile is already strong and recent. Pair it with a separate cover letter generator (LinkedIn doesn't have one).

4. Canva

Canva is a graphic design tool with hundreds of beautiful resume templates. Free tier gives you most templates. But it carries real ATS risk.

The ATS warning

Important: Most Canva resume templates use text boxes, multiple columns, and embedded graphics. ATS systems (especially the older ones at Infosys, TCS, Wipro) struggle to parse these. Your beautiful Canva CV may arrive at the recruiter as scrambled text — or get auto-rejected before it ever reaches a human.

If you do use Canva

  • Pick "Simple" or "Classic" templates only — never the design-heavy ones
  • Avoid multi-column layouts
  • Avoid templates with photos in text boxes
  • Test the output with a free tool like Jobscan before applying

Best for: Roles where design matters more than ATS (graphic designers, marketing roles at small studios, freelance pitches).

5. Resume.com

One of the oldest free resume builders. Genuinely free — no paywall at PDF download. US-focused but works for any country.

Strengths

  • Truly free, including PDF download
  • Simple, no-frills interface
  • Decent ATS pass rate

Weaknesses

  • Very few templates and they look dated
  • No AI
  • No India-specific features (₹ symbol, Indian phone format)
  • Site loads slowly from Indian IPs

6. Zety

Zety has the best templates of any "freemium" builder. But "free" is misleading — they paywall the PDF download. You have to pay $2.70 for a 14-day trial, then $24/month if you don't cancel.

Strengths

  • Beautiful, modern templates
  • Strong AI writing suggestions
  • Good keyword optimisation tools

Weaknesses

  • Not free for downloads — paywalled at the last step
  • Auto-renews if you don't cancel (lots of refund complaints)
  • $24/month is expensive in INR (~₹2,000)
  • No India-specific support

Heads up: Zety's $2.70 trial converts to $24/month automatically. Set a calendar reminder to cancel within 14 days if you only need one CV.

7. Novoresume

Premium-feel free tier with a 1-page limit. Good for minimalist CVs.

  • Free tier: 1 page, 2 templates, basic features
  • Paid: $19.99/month or $99/year
  • ATS: Passes well
  • Downside: 1-page limit makes it hard for experienced professionals; no India-specific features

8. Kickresume

Strong template library, good AI features — but most of it is paid.

  • Free tier: Limited templates, watermarked PDF
  • Paid: $9/month
  • Strengths: AI writing, cover letter generator, 35+ templates
  • Downside: Free tier is almost unusable due to watermarks

9. Google Docs Templates

Google Docs has a few built-in resume templates (look under Template Gallery). Genuinely free.

  • Pros: Free, real-time editing, easy to share via link, version history
  • Cons: Templates look basic. Manual ATS optimisation. No AI writing.

Best for: If you want full manual control and don't mind doing the keyword work yourself.

10. Microsoft Word Templates

Word ships with dozens of resume templates. Quality varies widely.

  • Pros: Offline, full editing control, common file format
  • Cons: Most templates are ATS-risky (text boxes, columns). Requires Office licence.

Some popular Word resume templates use text boxes that ATS systems can't parse. Stick to "Modern Chronological" or "Simple" Word templates — avoid anything with side panels.

Our verdict by use case

For freshers preparing for campus placements

Either Naukri Resume Builder (if you're already on Naukri) or MakeMyCVNow (if you want AI rewriting and a Gap Analyser). Both have genuine free tiers.

If you're already strong on LinkedIn

LinkedIn Resume Builder is the lowest-effort option. Don't overthink it.

If you have budget (~₹99–₹299)

MakeMyCVNow 7-day pass at ₹99 unlocks all 11 templates, the Gap Analyser, and unlimited AI. Cheaper than Zety, India-aware, and ₹99 is roughly 1/20 of Zety's monthly price.

For non-ATS / creative roles

Canva if you understand the ATS risk and apply directly to humans (e.g., design agencies, freelance, networking).

For experienced professionals applying internationally

Either MakeMyCVNow (for Norway specifically) or Resume.com (for generic US-style CVs).

FAQ

Is the Naukri Resume Builder really free?

Yes. It's free with a Naukri account. There's a small Naukri watermark on the free version but most recruiters don't care since Naukri is the platform they're using anyway.

Which builder has the best ATS pass rate?

In our tests: MakeMyCVNow Modern, Naukri, LinkedIn Resume Builder, and Resume.com all scored 90%+ ATS pass on default settings. Canva and design-heavy Word templates were inconsistent.

Do I need to pay for a good resume?

No. The content of your resume matters far more than the design. A well-written CV on a free Naukri template will beat a beautiful Canva CV with weak bullets, every time.

Should I include a photo on my Indian resume?

Optional for most roles, often expected at consulting firms and senior corporate roles. Avoid for software engineering at product companies (Flipkart, Zomato, etc.).

Which resume builder works with Finn.no for Norwegian jobs?

MakeMyCVNow's CV Gap Analyser explicitly supports Finn.no, NAV.no, Jobbnorge, and Webcruiter URLs and outputs CVs in Bokmål. We're the only India-launched builder with native Norwegian support that we know of.
